VICE PRESIDENT FOR INCLUSION, REED COLLEGE
Reed College (Reed) invites applications and nominations for the position of Vice President for Inclusion (VPI). Reporting to the president and serving on the president’s senior leadership team, the VPI will provide strategic leadership for the college’s efforts to advance diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. The role has two connected aims: to help create the conditions for an inclusive Reed community in which every member can thrive and contribute fully, and to support equitable student success so that students across populations have the opportunity to reach their potential. The vice president will advise institutional strategy and decision making, help Reed understand where experiences and outcomes remain uneven, build institutional capacity to engage and respond, and provide leadership for the Office for Inclusion’s people, programs, partnerships, and resources.
Reed is a selective, co-educational, national college of liberal arts and sciences with 1,278 students located in Portland, Oregon. Since its founding in 1908 as an independent undergraduate institution, Reed College has remained steadfast to one central commitment: to provide a balanced, comprehensive education in liberal arts and sciences, fulfilling the highest standards of intellectual excellence. Reed offers a high-quality liberal arts education with a rigorous curriculum, conference-, studio-, and laboratory-based teaching in small groups, high standards of scholarly practice, creative thinking, engaged citizenship, and a student body motivated by enthusiasm for serious intellectual work. Reed’s 26 departments offer 38 major areas with 62 separate major programs, of which 13 are interdisciplinary. Each department is housed within one of Reed's five academic divisions: the Arts; History and Social Sciences; Literature and Languages; Mathematical and Natural Sciences; and Philosophy, Religion, Psychology, and Linguistics. The college also offers an MA in Liberal Studies.
In October 2026, Reed launched the comprehensive campaign Meet the Moment: Together with Reed. It is the most ambitious campaign in Reed’s history, with a $350 million fundraising goal. The campaign centers on three interconnected priorities: advancing academic excellence, nurturing student success, and cultivating an inclusive community. Together, these priorities reflect Reed’s conviction that academic excellence is strengthened by a community in which students, faculty, and staff with different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives can engage deeply with one another in an environment of belonging and trust.
Heading the Office for Inclusion, the VPI oversees the multicultural resource center, students for education, equity, and direct service, and the associate dean for climate assessment and belonging strategy; leads the bias education and response team; serves as the staff point person for the diversity, equity, and inclusion committee of the board of trustees; and in collaboration with the dean of the faculty, supervises the director of the center for teaching and learning. The vice president also serves as one of the tri-chairs of the Presidential Council on Campus Climate.
Specifically, the VPI will take on the following opportunities and priorities in this role:
The ideal candidate will be an experienced institutional leader with a proven track record of creating meaningful change in institutions with deeply rooted cultures and complex, matrixed environments. A bachelor’s degree is required, and an advanced degree is preferred.
