Troy University was founded in 1887 as the State Normal School, established by an act of the Alabama Legislature to train teachers for the state’s public schools. Over nearly 140 years, the institution has grown from a single teacher-training campus in southeast Alabama into a comprehensive public doctoral and research university whose mission reaches far beyond its historic home in Troy.
In 1989, Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., was named Chancellor. During his 37 years of leadership, TROY was transformed from a regional university into Alabama’s International University, expanding its academic programs, global reach and service to traditional, adult, military-connected and online learners. Following Dr. Hawkins’ announcement of his retirement, the Troy University Board of Trustees is conducting a national search for the University’s next Chancellor.
Today, Troy University enrolls approximately 12,000 students through its campuses in Troy, Montgomery and Dothan; TROY Online; eight support centers in five states; and international partnerships in four countries. The University is organized into five academic colleges: the College of Science and Engineering, the Sorrell College of Business, the College of Arts and Humanities, the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences, and the College of Health Sciences. TROY is supported by approximately 480 full-time faculty members and a broader workforce of more than 2,500 full- and part-time employees. Its alumni network includes more than 175,000 graduates in all 50 states and dozens of countries.
TROY takes particular pride in its global reach and its long-standing commitment to military-connected and adult learners, maintaining support locations that serve members of the military community at five U.S. installations. The Sorrell College of Business holds AACSB accreditation in both business and accounting, and its MBA program has received national recognition. Troy competes in NCAA Division I FBS athletics as a member of the Sun Belt Conference, and the University has been nationally recognized for affordability. Its international student body, drawn from more than 65 countries, and its alumni network spanning six continents reflect an institution that has long viewed its mission in global terms.
Troy University seeks a Chancellor who will build upon this strong foundation while charting a bold course for the University’s next chapter. The Board is looking for an experienced, visionary leader with a genuine commitment to access, affordability, and student success, as well as the ability to lead a large, geographically dispersed institution with a strong sense of shared identity.
The next Chancellor must demonstrate integrity, sound judgment, and the interpersonal skills necessary to earn the trust of the Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, students, alumni and the many communities TROY serves in Alabama and around the world. The successful candidate will have the leadership experience necessary to advance the University’s academic quality, enrollment, research enterprise, financial strength, fundraising efforts, athletic programs, and distinctive global profile.
Applications and nominations will be accepted until the Chancellor is selected; however, interested candidates are encouraged to submit their materials by January 4, 2027, for full consideration.
Application materials should include a current curriculum vitae and a letter of interest. Nominations, applications and questions regarding the position should be directed to:
