POSITION: Part-Time Spanish Literacy Tutor (Special Programs Coordinator): Center for Adult Education; Lawrence Campus (45 Franklin Street); MCCC/MTA Unit Professional Position; up to 12 hours/week, 10-month academic year only.
SUMMARY: Northern Essex Community College is seeking a Part-Time Spanish Literacy Tutor to provide foundational reading and writing instruction in Spanish to adult learners who have limited or no literacy skills in their first language. The tutor will teach Spanish-speaking adults to read and write in Spanish, helping them develop essential literacy skills that serve as the foundation for English language acquisition, academic success, workforce readiness, and lifelong learning. By strengthening first-language literacy, the tutor will help learners develop the skills needed to more successfully acquire English and achieve their educational and career goals.
SCHEDULE: Up to 12 hours per week, scheduled Monday through Thursday, 6:00pm -9:00pm, based on program needs; 10-month academic year only.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
- Assess students' Spanish literacy skills and develop individualized learning plans to support their educational goals.
- Provide individual and small-group Spanish literacy instruction for adult learners with limited or no formal education in phonemic awareness (in Spanish), alphabet and sound-symbol correspondence, reading comprehension, and writing development
- Using evidence-based instructional practices appropriate for adult learners, deliver instruction in foundational reading and writing skills, including phonemic awareness, alphabet knowledge, sound-symbol correspondence, reading comprehension, vocabulary development, and written communication
- Support students in transferring first-language literacy skills to English language acquisition and academic success.
- Develop instructional materials and incorporate culturally responsive teaching practices that reflect students' backgrounds and experiences.
- Coordinate literacy support services with ESOL instructors and Center for Adult Education staff to promote student persistence and success.
- Monitor student participation and progress, maintain accurate records, and communicate regularly with the Assistant Director of Teaching and Learning.
- Participate in program meetings, professional development, and continuous improvement activities.

Job Requirements:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
NOTE: Unless otherwise noted, all required qualifications must be met by date of hire.
- Bachelor's Degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology, Business Administration, Mathematics, Computer Science, or other field related to area of assignment
- At least three years of experience tutoring or teaching literacy, reading, and/or writing skills to children, adults, or multilingual learners.
- Current or former Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) licensure as an Early Childhood (PreK-2) or Elementary (Grades 1-6) Teacher, or licensure as a Reading Specialist.
- Demonstrated experience providing literacy instruction, including foundational reading and writing skills, to learners with varying levels of literacy development.
- Experience using student support and case-management platforms.
- Bilingual (Spanish/English) including strong reading, writing, and oral communication skills.
- Knowledge of evidence-based literacy instruction practices and strategies appropriate for beginning readers and writers.
- Experience working with and supporting culturally and linguistically diverse populations.
- Experience working with adult learners and/or students with varying literacy levels.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a student support team.
- Comfortable using technology and computer-based learning systems.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master's degree in Spanish, Education, or a closely related field.
- Experience working in adult education, community-based literacy programs, or a community college setting.
- Knowledge of evidence-based literacy instruction practices for adult learners.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- All candidates must have legal authorization to work in the United States. Northern Essex Community College does not provide employment-based visa sponsorship.
- Employment is contingent upon the successful completion and review of a background check which will include CORI (Criminal Offender Record Information) and SORI (Sex Offender Registry Information).
Additional Information:
SALARY: $36.55/hour, Non-benefited position. This position is eligible for all purpose paid leave hours in accordance with the MCCC CBA.
