High School Equivalency Advisor (Part-Time)
POSITION: Part-Time High School Equivalency (HSE) Advisor (Academic Counselor); Center for Adult Education; Lawrence Campus (45 Franklin Street); MCCC/MTA Unit Part-Time Professional Position; up to 8 hours per week.
Funding: This is a grant-funded position. Continued employment is contingent upon the availability of grant funding and may end if funding is reduced or discontinued.
Summary
Northern Essex Community College (NECC) is seeking a Part-Time High School Equivalency (HSE) Advisor to provide academic counseling and support to adult learners pursuing a High School Equivalency credential.
The Advisor supports students from intake through credential completion and transition into postsecondary education, workforce training, or employment. The position requires independent professional judgment, counseling expertise, and an equity-minded approach to promoting student persistence and success.
Schedule
- Tuesday and Wednesday
- 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
- Up to 8 hours per week
Responsibilities
Responsibilities include:
- Provide individual and group academic counseling to HSE students.
- Develop, implement, and regularly update Individualized Education and Career Plans (IECPs).
- Assess student needs, identify barriers, and recommend appropriate interventions.
- Monitor academic progress, attendance, and engagement through proactive outreach and case management.
- Collaborate with HSE instructors and staff while maintaining student confidentiality.
- Administer, interpret, and utilize assessments such as MAPT and HiSET practice tests.
- Guide students through HiSET registration, preparation, testing accommodations, and post-testing planning.
- Plan and facilitate workshops on:
- Academic success
- Study skills
- Test preparation
- College and career transitions
- Serve as a cultural navigator for adult learners.
- Coordinate referrals to campus and community resources.
- Support student retention, re-engagement, and credential completion initiatives.
- Assist with student intake, orientation, placement, and onboarding.
- Maintain confidential counseling records and documentation in compliance with institutional, state, and grant requirements.
- Participate in meetings, program planning, assessment activities, and professional development.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must have:
- Master's degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology, or a closely related field, plus:
- Three (3) years of experience and/or training in college admissions, academic advising, career development, program/project management, or
- An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
- Demonstrated ability to provide professional academic counseling using counseling theory and student development principles
- Experience supporting adult learners, first-generation students, and immigrant populations
- Strong interpersonal, communication, organizational, and case management skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and student information/data systems
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in adult education, High School Equivalency (HSE), or ESOL programs
- Experience with DESE-funded programs and LACES data systems
- Bilingual (Spanish/English)

Compensation
- Pay: $36.55 per hour
- Benefits: Non-benefited position
- Eligible for all-purpose paid leave in accordance with the MCCC collective bargaining agreement
