The University of Texas at El Paso is a doctoral/research institution at the heart of the US-Mexico border region committed to the ideals of access and excellence. A leader among Hispanic-serving institutions, UTEP enrolls over 23,000 students -- about 80 percent of them Hispanic – and is the only doctoral research university in the nation with a majority Mexican-American student body. UTEP comprises six colleges and a School of Nursing and offers 72 bachelor’s, 73 master’s, and 20 doctoral degrees, with more in development. UTEP’s over $80 million in research spending a year ranks the University among the top 200 universities in the nation, and its over $35 million in federal research spending ranks fourth among all Texas public universities. UTEP is currently undergoing a transformation, including over $300 million in recent building expansion and renovation, and infrastructure for improvements. The center for intellectual capital in the region, UTEP has awarded more than 110,000 degrees since its founding in 1914. UTEP is one of the major economic engines in the Paso del Norte region, generating $369 million in annual local business volume and 7,050 jobs, and contributing $452 million in annual household income.

In its 2015 national university rankings, Washington Monthly again ranked UTEP in the top 10. In addition, UTEP maintained its #1 ranking as the nation’s leading university in fostering student social mobility. Our success in achieving both affordability and high quality in the low-resource U.S.-Mexico border setting requires a deep commitment by all UTEP faculty and staff, and our many friends and supporters.
