VICE PRESIDENT OF RESEARCH AND COLLECTIONS DENVER MUSEUM OF NATURE & SCIENCE Denver, Colorado The Denver Museum of Nature & Science (DMNS), the Rocky Mountain Region’s largest natural history museum and a leading resource for informal science education, seeks a strategic and dynamic leader to serve as its next Vice President of Research and Collections. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Vice President is the chief scientific executive in the institution. This role presents a rare opportunity for a collaborative and visionary leader to ensure quality scientific research, appropriate collection stewardship, and accurate and dynamic educational programming and exhibition content at a community-focused Museum on a growth trajectory. Established in 1900 as the Colorado Museum of Natural History, DMNS is a place of learning and engagement, where scientific research is conducted and communicated, and where collections are preserved in the public trust. A vital institution in the Denver metropolitan region and the tenth most attended museum in the nation, the DMNS places the values, interests, and needs of the community at the center of everything it does. The Museum envisions an empowered community that loves, understands, and protects the natural world. With significant recent investments in DMNS’s infrastructure, the new Vice President of Research and Collections will arrive at an exciting time. The Museum completed an ambitious capital expansion in 2014 which expanded the square footage of its facility by 23 percent and advanced three key centers of excellence: the Morgridge Family Exploration Center, where families engage with the Museum more deeply and where school audiences enjoy powerful and memorable education experiences; the Avenir Collections Center, where millions of artifacts and objects are being sustainably preserved and made accessible; and the Anschutz Gallery, which doubles DMNS’s capacity to host world-class temporary exhibitions. A key member of DMNS’s executive team, the Vice President of Research and Collections provides forward-thinking and collaborative leadership that drives focus and efficiency while fostering innovation to ensure a robust scientific core that allows the Museum to be positioned for deeper integration. The Vice President manages an operating plan that incorporates annual goals, objectives, and strategies for the Museum’s core scientific competencies, and is responsible for providing the leadership necessary to ensure delivery of critical scientific advances in alignment with visitor expectations and DMNS’s strategic intent. The successful candidate will be innovative and creative with an inclusive and broad personal philosophy and a hunger for community engagement. The Vice President will be a seasoned manager with a deep background in science; experience in a museum or with collections is not required.
