Department Summary:
Fresno Pacific University’s (FPU) Teacher Preparation programs have a strong reputation within the Central Valley’s educational community. Graduates are recognized for their excellent preparation to teach and serve in the region’s diverse schools and beyond. The Mission and Vision for Teacher Preparation reflect the university’s identity as a Christian institution. We prepare educators who are scholars, peacemakers, professionals, and leaders, individuals who embody the values of the Fresno Pacific University Idea in a wide range of educational settings.
Teacher Preparation programs are housed within the School of Graduate and Professional Studies (GPS). Offerings include the Multiple Subject, Single Subject, and Education Specialist Credentials, all accredited by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC), as well as the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT). Programs are available at the university’s main campus in southeast Fresno and at a regional campus in Visalia.
The Teacher Preparation Department is dedicated to providing students with a strong foundation in educational theory and pedagogical practice, grounded in a Christian worldview. This perspective gives the program its sense of purpose and direction, fostering excellence in teaching and a deep commitment to addressing the needs of students, families, and communities.
FPU’s Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT/SPED MAT) program includes the credential coursework and four additional courses which students complete in two semesters while teaching post credential. Candidates may return to the MAT/SPED MAT program within 5 years of completing their credential through FPU. Throughout the arc of the MAT/SPED MAT, students are encouraged to develop habits of inquiry and reflection on the problems of practice that they face as pre-service and early-career teachers. These problems of practice form the basis of their classroom research projects. They develop an understanding of qualitative research methodology which they will apply by completing an action research project. The program utilizes features such as a cohort model and synchronous online instructional delivery to foster a supportive professional community.
Responsibilities
The Coordinator of the MAT/SPED MAT program provides leadership and management of all aspects of the post-credential MAT/SPED MAT coursework, including adjunct recruiting, student advising, and program assessment.
The coordinator provides curriculum oversight and teaches as the Lead Instructor in the MAT sequence courses. The Lead instructor provides support for adjunct instructors also teaching the same classes concurrently. Teaching in the credential program in their area of expertise is also possible.
