Job Description

Chair, Humanities, History, and Social Sciences Department (HHSS)

The faculty of the Humanities, History, and Social Sciences Department (HHSS) at Columbia College Chicago seeks an accomplished academic leader, scholar, and teacher to serve as their Chair. Situated in the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS), HHSS is a multidisciplinary department that introduces every student at the College to academic explorations in history, humanities, and the social sciences. The successful candidate is expected to raise the visibility of HHSS by fostering academic programming and activities, and helping to shape Columbia’s newly emerging college-wide core curriculum. The Chair works closely with a variety of constituents at the College, particularly the LAS Dean, to whom the Chair reports, and the Office of the Provost.

Located in the vibrant South Loop area of downtown Chicago, HHSS is home to 26 full-time and approximately 80 part-time faculty members and 4 full-time academic support staff, and minors in Black World Studies, Latino and Latin American Studies, and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. In addition, HHSS also shares a major and minor in Cultural Studies with the Department of English and Creative Writing, and currently oversees the College’s minors in Education and a major in Early Childhood Education.

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Candidates must have a record of working collaboratively in an environment of shared governance and have familiarity with collective bargaining agreements, specifically at the level of academic support staff and part-time faculty

• Preference will be given to those who have experience in leading academic units during periods of transition, a demonstrable record of teaching excellence, and a trajectory of scholarly achievement strong enough to warrant appointment as a senior faculty member (full professor) at Columbia College Chicago

• Demonstrated ability to work with a culturally diverse population and promote the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion within HHSS and the College

• Applicant must possess strong leadership and team building skills, experience in motivating groups and individuals toward common goals, a record of cultivating the growth of academic programs, as well as excellent oral and written communications skills

• The successful candidate will demonstrate an ability to manage change and improvement by establishing inclusive and constructive structures and processes—with good sense and good humor

Qualifications:

• Candidates must possess a Ph.D., with preference for those in the disciplines of history or the social sciences.

To ensure consideration, applicants should submit the following as one document (.doc .docx or .pdf):
• Letter of application
• Curriculum Vitae
• List of Professional References

Review of applications will begin January 31, 2018 and will remain open until the position is filled.
